At Talbot Village Trust, we’re launching a volunteering scheme in early January to support conservation works in our woodland. A recent ecology survey confirms our areas’ transition to a secondary oak woodland, and our management plan aims to encourage the development of native tree species. Our volunteering sessions help to remove invasive non-native species such as rhododendron and cherry laurel, reduce some of the middle storey vegetation to improve light on the woodland floor, and we will create dead wood habitats to support species that favour those.
We’d be delighted if you wanted to join our volunteering first-hand, but if you’re aware of others who might like to help too, please pass on this opportunity. Our volunteering runs through planned and supervised sessions of 2-3 hours per week. We’ll be providing hot drinks, gloves, and tools, but volunteers should wear warm and waterproof clothing, sturdy footwear, and be ready to get a bit muddy! Currently, our volunteering is open to adults over 18, though we welcome conversations with local schools and groups to explore how we may be able to arrange exceptions.
We’ll be working to suit volunteer availability wherever possible, so we’ll confirm dates and times in early 2024. If you would like to sign up to join sessions, please email us and we’ll add you to the list.
