The first man to go into space in 1961 was Yuri Gagarin, and the first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova. She went into space in 1963.  

First man of African origin to go into space was Guion “Guy” Bluford. He was accepted by NASA in 1978 and went into space in 1983. 

First woman of African origin to go into space was Mae C. Jemison in 1992.
