Dorset Ethnic Minority Awards Launched

On Friday the 9th of February 2018, Bournemouth University, BU International College, Dorset Race Equality Council and Dorset Ethnic Minority Association will partner up to support the launch the county’s first ever Ethnic Minority Awards. The Dorset Ethnic Minority Awards (DEMA) seek to showcase and celebrate the trailblazing members of the black and ethnic minority (BAME) community.

Nominations for the DEMA awards are open till 9th May 2018 giving the Dorset public 90 days to nominate exceptional BAME’s who deserve recognition for their contribution to the community.  Shortlisted individuals will be announced on its website on 31st May 2018 and winners will be crowned at an event in September.

DEMA, which is the first event of its kind in Dorset, is co-founded by Bournemouth University alumni Nanzy Sebata BA (Hons) Events and leisure marketing. The event has gathered the support of prominent businesses and community organisations including Dorset Race Equality Council, Blumi London, MILPA Bournemouth and Bournemouth University.

Dorset Race Equality Council commented: “We are proud to be supporting the launch of the Dorset Ethnic Minority Awards and look forward to honouring the individuals that have immensely contributed to Dorset county.”  

To mark the launch and the opening of the nominations, DEMA has launched its website which has the full details of the awards and how the public can start nominating the county’s rising stars of the BAME community.

The categories which are now open for nominations are all listed on www.DorsetEthnicMinorityAwards.org.uk. The full list of awards is available on the website, but here’s a snippet of some of the categories:

  • Unsung Hero Award
  • Female Entrepreneur of the year
  • Male Entrepreneur of the year
  • Innovation Award
  • Community Champion Award
  • Community Group Award
  • Academic Award
  • Young Achiever Award
  • Friend of Dorset Award
  • Lifetime Achievement Award

Co-founder and CEO, Nanzy Sebata, added: “We are excited to be able to launch DEMA and to be opening nominations to the public. Dorset is a county with a number of exceptional individuals and we’re proud to be able to be the platform that shines a light on the BAME individuals who are rising above negative stereotypes and excelling in their field.”

“We’re also keen to get the whole county behind the awards and would like to encourage everyone to take part in nominating the exceptional individuals who are changing Dorset for the better.”

Nominations for the DEMA awards end on May 9, 2017 allowing 90 days for the Dorset public to nominate exceptional BAME’s who deserve recognition for their contribution to the community.  Shortlisted individuals will be announced on its website on 31st May 2018.

This year, the final award ceremony will take place in Bournemouth Town on 29 September 2018 at the BIC’s Solent Hall and tickets will be available to purchase from the 1st of May 2018.
